James Charles Lehrer
Doctor of Humane Letters  1989
Status: conferred

Penetrating journalist, author of books and plays, acclaimed broadcaster and producer of public programming, James Charles Lehrer exemplifies the standards of public commentary that America's founding fathers might have hoped for in conceiving the First Amendment. Mr. Lehrer, visible each weekday evening on public television where his work leads to the examination of national and international issues, is a writer with integrity who has the ability to expose partial truths with gentle good humor and to search for complex truth with judgment. Building on his early career in Dallas, he has now achieved international distinction as a writer of drama and prose fiction and as a creative television producer and reporter. For his contribution to exceptional standards in news analysis and interpretation, for his creative writing that is rich in love, wisdom and wit, and for his instruction of the American public about issues the public must understand if democracy is to fulfill its promise, Southern Methodist University takes pride in recognizing the intelligence, literacy, and honesty of James Charles Lehrer and in conferring upon him the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
